"Shock and Awe" presented by 1 Zero 8 Promotions, was locked and loaded on May 30. Despite a sold out Rockfest and Royals game, loyal mma fans crowded the mixed martial art's venue for an action packed night. With a near sold out crowd, those that showed up were not disappointed. One Zero Eight featured a stacked card of sixteen fights, including a title fight for the 155 lbs. championship, along with kickboxing and female mma action.
Mixed martial arts legend "Big John" McCarthy along with boxing president Tim Lueckenhoff were in attendence. Plenty of autographs and photographs were taken when "Big John" showed up. Gracious and ever humble, he was game to sign any autograph requests and pictures. A true class act. 1 Zero 8 would like to thank you both men for attending the event.
Kicking off the night was Jacob Akin against Cory Schwendemannn. Akin made quick work of Schwendemann in the first round. Referee Chuck Wolfe took mercy on Schwendemann two minutes into the bout and awarded Akin the TKO victory.
Jett Jones against Darin Seely was next. Jones looked impressive, submitting a game Darin Seely in the first round via arm bar. Seely, a collegiate wrestler, was able to take Jones down but couldn't finish him. With a solid jujitsu foundation, Jones found the arm and got the tap with only seconds remaining in the first round.
Jeremy Lambert was the third fight of the night with an impressive first round TKO over Jonathon Price-Dukes. Lambert was patient and picked apart his opponent as the fight went on. He landed some heavy shots as Dukes retreated for cover. Unable to defend himself, referee Chuck Wolfe intervened to call the fight a TKO. Congrats to Lambert on his first mma fight and first win.
Hometown favorite Dave Milliren dispatched Brandon Courtney in the first round as well. Milliren secured a quick takedown and was able to put Courtney in the "crucifix" position where he pounded away until the fight was called.
Another hometown staple, Derek Williams showed that his athleticism and punching power was too much for Shawn Crowley. Crowley endured 3 minutes of punishment in the first round before calling it quits in the second round. Unable to answer the bell in the second round, Williams took the victory.
Newcomers Chris French and Justin Barstow made their mma debut at 170 lbs. French had the crowd behind him and bombarded Barstow with strikes in the first and second round before the fight was called. Impressive debut for French who showed a lot of composure for his first fight.
Matt Malone and Anthony Fredricks both undefeated fighters, entertained the crowd with their kickboxing match. Malone unleashed some vicious offense that knocked Fredricks down twice in the first round. Fredricks endured the first round but couldn't escape the second round where he took the final blow that put him out. Impressive showing for Malone who improved his kickboxing record to 5-0.
Erin Harris and Melinda Wood graced the crowd with their beauty and mma prowess after the intermission. Both ladies displayed excellent striking and submission skills. At times, Wood appeared to have secured an armbar from her guard, only to have it reversed by Harris. Both fighters were adept at submissions and countered eachother's ground game perfectly. In the second round, Harris was able to take her opponent down and secure a modified "scarf" choke. Congratulations to both ladies for stepping into the ring. Harris' charisma and mma prowess gives her a bright future in mma.
In what could've easily been the main event, Richard "Boo" Bouphanouvong clashed with tough journeyman Romon Barber. Both title holders, Boo represented 1 Zero 8's 170 lbs. champion. Although this was a non-title fight, it had title fight written all over it. Engaging out their corners, both appeared composed. Boo initiated the action with low kicks to Barber's legs. Looking to land a big blow, Barber was patient as he stalked his opponent. Barber has knockout power that can quickly change the tempo of a fight and Boo was aware of that. Boo fought a smart fight that didn't allow Barber to unload his heavy hands. Constantly mixing up his leg kicks, jab/cross combo, and takedowns, Boo threw Barber a puzzle he couldn't solve.
A vicious slam by Boo and controlling Barber's back in the third round secured the judges' nod. Richard Bouphanouvong improved to a perfect record of 8-0. Kudos to Barber for putting up a great fight and taking on an excellent opponent.
In another entertaining battle, Heath Finkemeier faced an intimidating Bryan Roberts. Both men chiseled and ready to inflict damage, had the crowd on their feet. This also could've been the main event! Finkemeier didn't look the least bit intimidated at the staredown. Roberts, a massive man with knock out power, appeared ready to put a loss in Finkemeier's perfect record. Coming out the corner, Finkemeier initiated the pace by throwing side kicks and round kicks that threw Roberts' game off. Roberts shot in for a clinch and was able to muster some dirty boxing that only put a smile on Finkemeier's face. Roberts landed some short punches to the body but Finkemeier had enough of it and created some space for the Thai clinch.
With the "Thai Plum" Finkemeier landed a heavy knee to Roberts' chin that put him out cold. The Finkemeier crowd jumped on their feet as the fight was called to an end minutes into the first round. Finkemeier continues to prove his legitimacy for a title shot with this impressive win.
In the main event for One Zero Eight's 160 lbs. Title, Andrew Tyson faced off against cornhusker Chris Robare. Both fighters stepped into the ring undefeated and ready to have the gold around their waist. Tyson started the action with a leg kick that Robare caught and took him down with. Robare made a tactical mistake with the takedown because that was where Tyson dominated the fight. A proven wrestler, Tyson reversed the takedown as soon as he hit the mat and took Robare's back where he pounded him until referee Chuck Wolfe intervened to call the fight.
Andrew "The Beast" Tyson is crowned 1 Zero 8's 160 lbs. Champion.
One Zero Eight would again, like thank Big John McCarthy and Tim Lukenoff for attending the event. Most importantly, we would also like to thank all the fans that showed up. Don't miss out on our next event September 12!
